Friday 30 January 2009 - Guitar Weekend For Intermediates - With PAUL ROSE

Venue: The Inn at Lathones

A basic introduction, familiarising ourselves with the skill and interests of people taking part over coffee to start.

I would like to focus on chord structures and related scales to improve melodic soloing and composition.
Using some prerecorded backings that participants can begin to overlay some basic scales over basic chord patterns.
Highlighting what is possible with some very simple changes within the chords & scales. The philosophy of practise can be looked at here with some exercises for sharpening both mental and physical agility, but in a musical and meaningful manner.

This would lead on to some harmony experiments that would ultimately lead to some recordings being made with my laptop over the prerecorded backings. This could be a very interesting insight into guitar production and mixing that will really enhance demos or Cd's depending on where the students are at. Also some ensemble work with groups of 2 to 4 guitarists to explore harmony further and at the same time show how good guitars can sound as a duo/trio/quartet.

Technique would be a focusing point, helping guitarists to discover some quite basic tricks to give a flavour of jazz, blues or country etc to there soloing. Some tricks and sound effects are always fun at this point. Slide guitar and tunings also to be included here.

Time will be spent on applying the guitars many voices to recording accompaniments and creating sound scapes and atmosphere.

I would also like to spend some time on my acoustic work, demonstrating the pedal etc and building parts for accompaniment.

It would be great to round off the Sunday with a little gig for the students (optional) to do say 20 mins each and then round everything off with a jam. I will be preparing some materials to be taken away and may consider including a free DVD to help keep some of the weekends topics fresh in the mind.

Throughout the 2 days would like to make sure that everybody is grasping the task in hand and make sure no one is being too perplexed or left behind. I would also like guitarists to bring an acoustic guitar as well as an electric for the purpose of variation in tone and not needing to plug in a load of amps. I would also anticipate a fair bit of question and answer work, that may divert us to some spontaneous and stimulating areas too
